Stepping towards sustainably provides an ever-evolving improvement to Pittsburgh’s River Avenue District. With assets such as community garden space, farmer’s markets, and green roofs this plan can provide a fresh and clean start to this current brownfield. River Avenue’s new design focuses on all people, planet and profit. People will experience a green, pedestrian-friendly space to work, shop, live and explore. With room for retail shops, restaurants and more there is nothing but room for profit. With the addition of these assets, River Avenue will transition from being a drive-thru to being a drive-to for visitors from all over. With nearly no vehicular traffic running through the site and promoting a park one and walk mentality, this site has the capabilities to provide countless benefits for the planet it sits on.
This new street plan exhibits a cleaner, less traffic dense masterplan and features street side greenspaces, like this farmer's market along River Avenue.
In the middle courtyard of the central hub will function as a two-part greenspace. To the North there will be sporadic plantings and on the South due to shade pattern, and use of contrast, this plaza will feature sporadic water features.
