North Shore Axis is a culmination of existing axes and proposed axes joining together to create an organized and easily manageable site for residents and visitors. In addition to creating an organized and easily manageable site, this site focuses on improving the overall quality of the site, through the implementation of pedestrian corridors, traffic calming methods, green-infrastructure, public transportation, and improved site access points.
SITE POTENTIALS:
- Increase connectivity to downtown Pittsburgh and surrounding areas
- Increase circulation within site
- Create useful open space areas
- Mixed-Use development
- Beautification to the site and the Three Rivers Heritage Trail
- Brownfield restoration/redevelopment
- River access
Overall, this site offers many areas for potential development. The large number of vacant lots and the relatively flat and gently sloping topography of the area make for perfect development areas. The Three Rivers Heritage Trail is a major asset to the site and is a major reason people are currently visiting the site. The redevelopment of the old Heinz factory into the Heinz Lofts helps to create a residential presence on the site and can be a steppingstone to more residential or mixed-use buildings in the future.
The concept design was intended to use the existing axes to create a linear connection throughout the site. The linear connection will help to make the site more manageable and easier to navigate for pedestrians. The northern end of the site features a residential area, while the middle and lower end of the site features a mix of commercial, mixed-use, and office buildings.
