The Concept of my design is A Gateway to Brooklyn: Connecting the Community. This concept is demonstrated throughout the design by focusing on 4 major aspects. These aspects are environment, community, food and commercial opportunities and the homeless population. For this heavily vegetated site, preserving the existing vegetation was important to me as it acts as natural stormwater management. I’ve left the buffer on the west end of the site as well as disturbed the central area of the site as little as possible. I’ve connected the community by providing more residential areas as well as public trails, open space and parks. There is opportunity for grocery stores, restaurants and shops in the buildings in the commercial area. Providing amenities for the homeless community actively living on the site was very important to me, so I’ve added a shelter and transitional living in the design.
