Current & Past Site Use
The site today shows a mix of neglect and ongoing use. A number of unhoused individuals have set up makeshift shelters throughout the property, and the old used car lot is now mostly broken, cracked concrete. The former junkyard area has grown wild, with thick underbrush and unmaintained trees taking over. Before the land was filled in around 1953, it was originally marshland along the Patapsco River. After being filled, it became the Potee Street Auto Junkyard, which operated for several decades. The Maryland Department of General Services took ownership in 1996 and identified the property as a brownfield due to contamination from its past automotive and industrial uses. It has since been placed in the Maryland Brownfield Voluntary Cleanup Program for environmental assessment and remediation
