Practical Metalworking is an S3 Course primarily focusing on developing metalworking skills whilst providing key information about materials and processes. Students are challenged with creating multiple metalworking projects to a high standard whilst learning commonly used metalwork processes.

This tough initial project challenges the students resilience introducing them to the hard work required to make metal projects shine.
This intricate Nail box tests students marking out accuracy and introduces them to metalwork folding. The more accurate they can be the greater the finished product.
The Letter Holder reinforces the previous learning from the Nail Box and introduces Spot Welding as their first thermal joining learning experience.
Developing knowledge and experience on the center lathe is the key priority during this project. Students are marked on their accuracy of the metal turned handle as well as the quality of finish.
Students get their first experience forging metal, Learning the process of heating and bending metal to create spirals, twists and interesting shapes. Students also briefly learn the process of annealing during the create on the dish.
Students combine all of the skills they have learnt throughout the year to create this functional Hacksaw frame. Students forge the frame and weld the components together, the accuracy of measuring out is tested throughout and multiple aspects of the design involve the use of the center lathe.
Assessment will take place throughout each project as well as at the end of each topic.
