Millburn Academy CDT Department have worked hard to be able to offer students with as many pathways as possible to help allow for students to get the best possible experience from their time at school. We currently offer the core Technology based National Qualifications that the SQA provide. Students can now specialise in the areas they excelled in throughout S1/S2 and narrow down into the subjects that they enjoy doing. Currently at Millburn Academy we offer:
S3 Graphic Communication > Advanced Higher
S3 Design & Manufacture > Higher
S3 Engineering Science > Higher
S3 Enterprising Craft (Practical Woodworking) > National 5
S3 Practical Metalworking > National 5
The S3 Graphic Communication course introduces learners to the diverse and ever increasing variety of presentation methods employed in Graphic Communication. They allow the opportunity for learners to gain skills in reading, interpreting and creating graphics as well as initiating, developing and communicating their ideas graphically. The course is practical, exploratory and experiential in nature and combine elements of creativity and communicating for visual impact with elements of design protocol and standards.
This Course provides a broad practical introduction to design, materials and manufacturing processes. It provides opportunities for learners to gain skills in both designing and in communicating design proposals. It allows learners to explore the properties and uses of materials and to make models and prototypes of products.
In Engineering Science, pupils will develop skills in analysis and problem-solving, design, systems and evaluation. The course has three overall topic areas; Structures & Mechanisms, Electronics & Control and Systems & Energy. The course is taught by a mix of theory work, practical work and simulation.
Practical Woodwork is an S3 Course primarily focusing on developing woodworking skills whilst developing knowledge of materials and processes. There are multiple different projects that pupils are challenged with that use flat-frame and carcass joints as well as some machining.
Practical Metalworking is an S3 Course primarily focusing on developing metalworking skills whilst providing key information about materials and processes. Students are challenged with creating multiple metalworking projects to a high standard whilst learning commonly used metalwork processes.
