National 4 and 5 courses introduce learners to the diverse and ever increasing variety of presentation methods employed in Graphic Communication. They allow the opportunity for learners to gain skills in reading, interpreting and creating graphics as well as initiating, developing and communicating their ideas graphically. The courses are practical, exploratory and experiential in nature and combine elements of creativity and communicating for visual impact with elements of design protocol and standards. The aims of the Course are to enable learners to:
develop skills in graphic communication techniques, including the use of equipment, materials and software
extend and apply knowledge and understanding of graphic communication standards, protocols and conventions, where these apply
develop an understanding of the impact of graphic communication technologies on our environment and society.
Childs Toy - 3D Inventor Modelling & Orthographics
Wall display - 3D Inventor Modelling, Orthographics, DTP, CAD Rendering
3D Glasses case - Technical Drawing, DTP, 3D Inventor Modelling
Mobile phone holder - 2D Sketched Orthographics, 3D sketching techniques & hand rendering
Health Graph - Graphs and Charts, DTP & Infographics
At National 5 pupils will complete a end of year written exam which accounts for 67% of their overall grade. They will also complete a coursework assignment in class that accounts for the remaining 33% of their grade.
Throughout the year students are continually assessed to monitor progression and to ensure students are working at the correct level before sitting any exams. Students will complete a preliminary examination in January and this will act as a helpful measure of this progress.
Students are reminded how to use inventor and are taught how to produce orthographic drawings and rendered images.
Students learn all the DTP elements and principles required for N4/5 and how to use them. As well as using the skills they just learned to produce working drawings for the wall display.
3D glasses case introduces students to technical drawings as students learn about true shape and surface developments whilst continuing work on inventor and using DTP.
2D and 3D sketching practice as students are taken trough the sketching skills needed for N4/5. Students will practice 2D orthographic sketching, 3D isometric drawing, 1 and 2 point perspective sketching and oblique sketching. They are then taught how to render i graphic communication.
This unit covers graphs and charts, students are taught the theory they need for an exam and how to use the theory to create eye catching info graphics.
Pupils will be given homework at regular intervals. This homework will be related to the topic of work that they are undertaking at the time and will also act as useful revision for the final exam.
