The S1 experience covers Craft, Design and Technology in a very broad way. We aim to cover all of our subject benchmarked areas throughout the year whilst giving students a wide range of experiences to prepare them for further study.

Students get their first experience in our workshops with this brilliantly simple woodwork pencil case project. Students focus on safe working procedures and learning how to use basic hand and machine tools.
Students will get their first taste of Design & Manufacture in this funky little desk tidy. They will learn how to work with acrylic plastic and continue to build up their workshop skills.
Students are introduced to basic line work and sketching, leading onto more complex shapes and forms. they then learn the basics of Rendering and apply these techniques to everyday items. These skills will help students in Graphic Communication and Design & Manufacture throughout their time in the department.
Students get their first experience of Technical Drawing work. They will learn how to use the basic drawing board equipment to draw some well known logos.
Students learn to use the DTP software Serif Page Plus and get to make Holiday Greetings cards for their friends and family.
Students merge Plastic, Metal and Woodwork together during this projects putting all of the skills they have previously learnt to the test. They also use the DTP learnt during the CAD topic to create their own personalised backdrop.
Students get their first taste of Engineering Science in this simple yet engaging mini torch project.
Students continue with Engineering Science in challenging project. Students are tasked to make a structurally sound bridge with as little material as possible.
Students are introduced to Computer Aided Design (CAD) a large component of the Graphic Communication course. Starting with a pupil favorite 'Homestyler'. Homestyler is a free interior design packages where students have creative freedom to design the insides of a house. Students are then introduced to Google Sketch-Up another free package that focuses more on modelling the exterior of the house. They then will finish the topic off by creating a advertising leaflet to sell their house using DTP software Serif page Plus.
S1 students will finish the year with this Design and Manufacture Metalwork project. Students personalise it with their own designs and finish it off by dip coating it for the first time.
Pupils will be given homework at regular intervals. This homework will be related to the topic of work that they are undertaking at the time.
