We all want to feel confident and prepared when we step into our first job after graduation. What you’re learning now — not only technical knowledge, but also how you work with others — will make a big difference. Employers are looking for team players who can solve problems, communicate clearly, and act professionally. These “soft skills” are key to avoiding common workplace mistakes and standing out as a strong new hire.
At MATC, we call these soft skills Career Essentials — they’re the habits, attitudes, and abilities that every student is expected to develop before graduating, getting a job, or transferring to another college.
No matter what program you're in, you'll focus on these three Career Essentials:
Effective Communication: Share your ideas clearly and respectfully through writing, speaking, and listening in class, online, or at work.
Effective Problem Solving: Use your technical skills and creativity to find smart, efficient solutions to real-world problems.
Professionalism: Show that you’re dependable, respectful, ethical, and accountable in all your work and interactions.
Every class at MATC is aligned with at least one Career Essential. In some courses, you'll be introduced to these skills; in others, you'll have opportunities to practice them. Closer to graduation, certain courses will ask you to complete a Career Essentials Assessment — usually through an assignment in Blackboard. This assessment helps you reflect on your growth and track your progress in skills that truly matter in the workplace. Once your work is evaluated, your results will be available in Blackboard.
If you’re not sure how Career Essentials are being used in your course or want tips on how to improve, just ask your instructor! They’re here to help you build the skills you’ll need to thrive in your future career.
