For this brief, I've decided to create an advert for my second client, Twentyfours. I plan to go for a vintage-style video with a mix of professional shots. I plan to gather multiple Twentyfours garments, items and a couple of models wearing some of them. I also plan to create some scenes. For example, I plan to film someone handing a Twentyfours branded bag while he's being handed some money.
I've decided to base this brief on a designer named 'ILLPRESSIONS'. He often goes for a vintage theme and uses vintage camcorders for his videography. He also helped direct and shoot the music video that I'm referencing.
I've decided to use this music video as the main inspiration for this video brief. This video consists of professional and retro-style videography mixed into one sequence. There's also a 'Behind The Scenes Video' (above) that follows a vlog-style video documenting the behind-the-scenes of the music video. Both videos feature VHS footage which is likely created with a camcorder. I like the music video because it features still shots alongside the videos. It also features extremely clean, professional shots.
For the first shoot, I gathered a couple of models and decided to do the photoshoot and record the VHS footage for the video. For the photoshoot, I added a 'black pro mist filter', a lens for the end of my camera. It exaggerates the effect of light in a photograph and adds a soft blur effect to the image.
We began filming around Oxford, placing stickers and I began recording the whole process on an older camera to mimic some of the shots in the reference video. I plan to use both of these in the final video. The Photoshoot and VHS Footage can be viewed below.
In the second shoot, I decided to mainly focus on getting video footage. I decided to follow a similar plan to shoot 1. I grabbed the same group of people and walked around some back streets in town. I filmed everything I could and I came out with a handful of usable footage. I also did another photoshoot which can be seen if click the button below:
To colour-grade my footage, I had to use a software called 'Davinci Resolve'. The colour grading is much more intense compared to Adobe Premiere Pro so I put all my footage through this software and exported it.
I copied the exact values of one of the shots in the reference video by using a tool 'called shot match to this clip'. This can be seen below:
This tool attempts to match the grading in any video/photo to your footage. With some extra, minor adjustments, you can get a very close match.
This shot matched the location where I shot my footage so I used this screenshot.
For this brief, I wanted to add my own music. So I composed a backing track for this video which complemented the video. I didn't want to create anything too complex so i came up with this:
To begin the premiere pro process, I began putting the VHS footage and colour-graded footage together. I put it together so it would go with the music I created. I added some slowed-down footage at the beginning of the intro. Throughout the video, I added some film and light leak overlays appearing mostly when a clip transitioned to another clip.
To create the 'colour leak' effect, I used a plugin called 'Lumetri Colour', A plugin which allows you to adjust the colour and appearance of footage. But, I found out that if you exaggerate the effect on curves, it can create an interesting effect. I then automated it so it would fade in and out. I used this technique in the intro and outro of the video.
To create the effects seen at 00:23 and 00:46, I added the effect 'Invert'. This effect simply inverts an image's colours. I thought this would add a little more to the video, creating some variety. I also made this effect flicker throughout 00:46-00:47. To do this I duplicated the original clip and added it above. Then I added the invert effect and chopped the video up accordingly so it would add a flicker effect.
Adding the photos was very simple. I dragged the images in and resized them so they would fit inside the video and placed them along with the beat. However, I wanted to link this portion to my designer/photographer, 'ILLPRESSIONS'; he often mirrors his photos to create a seamless, repeating pattern effect. To do this, I just duplicated the picture on each side and flipped them around so they mirrored. This can be seen at 00:27.
Finally, I added some finishing touches to the video. I added the Twentyfours logo at the end of the video with a fade-in, fade-out effect.
In conclusion, I believe the outcome was a success. However, there are a few things I would do differently. When it comes to filming, I would get some more abstract shots. I would experiment more with angles and techniques. When it comes to editing, I would add some more technical transitions and effects. Overall, I am happy with the outcome.
