Advice on choosing a topic in Visual Arts

1. You will be writing an essay that is researching and investigating an issue, concept or idea connected to the Visual Arts, ensure that the artists you choose have exhibited nationally/internationally to ensure they have sufficient information written about them.
2. It sounds obvious but choose an art movement/artists/time period that you are interested in.
3. It is strongly advisable that you select pieces that you have seen and experienced in real life, make use of the Lima galleries and museums on your doorstep.
4. Examples of Visual Arts Research Questions could include:
   1. How was Picasso's artwork influenced by cultural, social and political events?
   2. How do the Chicha posters of Elliot Tupac reflect Peruvian society?
   3. How important was the DADA manifesto and did this change the way the surrealist artists were viewed by the general public?
5. Chat to Miss Griffiths or Ms Meneses at the beginning of the process, this way you can ensure you are on the right track from the start!

Advice for research in Visual Arts

You will be using a variety of sources to answer your research question/s, it is strongly advisable that you select pieces that you have seen and experienced in real life, make use of the Lima galleries and museums on your doorstep, you can even email curators. Do not just rely on the internet….

Advice for write-up in Visual Arts

• Write your bibliography and figure list in full as you go.
• Ensure all quotes are properly referenced as you go and write them down using quotation marks with a page number so that you know where they have come from (you will be surprised by how much ‘accidental’ plagiarism happens through not writing quotes down properly at the beginning of your research process.
• Break down your overarching question into individual research questions and use that to begin structuring your EE.
