1) The topic must allow an approach that specifically involves chemistry
2) The scope of the EE should specifically involve chemistry and should enable all the criteria to be addressed
3) The research question must be formulated as an actual question, be sharply focused and able to be treated effectively within the word limit.
4) Choose a research question allows discussion of conflicting ideas and theories, avoids dangerous chemicals,
5) Avoid research questions where the answer is already well known.
6) The EE topic can come from the core // the AHL topics or // one of the IB Chemistry options of the syllabus.
To address the research question the student must research the existing literature on the topic and choose an appropriate methodology to pursue the investigation by:
1) undertaking work in the laboratory or
2) basing their research on existing data.
1) Keep a diary of what you do and why you do it
2) Keep a contemporaneous record of all books read and all references (using Markham referencing style)
3) Get your data collected as soon as possible
