Central idea: Rules and Laws within a society can shape its structure

To begin our inquiry into the purpose of rules and laws, we opened the history book to experience a time in Britain when rules and laws were very different from those we have today. We had a wonderful day dressed as Victorians and experiencing the school rules children would have had to abide by, such as standing when an adult entered the classroom, being seated in rows with boys and girls separated and even tasting gruel! When the children found out that some children had to go to work from a very young age, they agreed that they much prefer life today.

We have been learning how to tell the time to the nearest 5 minutes. The children have worked incredibly hard, counting in 5s around the clock and learning the unique language used such as o'clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to the hour.
