Oak        Learning Update

Central idea: Shelter, for humans and animals, is a basic need.

We started by discussing why a shelter is so important. We decided that a shelter provided:

The children in Team Oak were upset to think that some animal shelters are at risk in different parts of the world. We focused our attention on Antarctica where the ice is melting at an alarming rate due to global warming.

Oliver: "The world is getting hotter so the ice is melting."

Imogen: "The penguins are going to get really really sick."

Xander: "If we just turn the lights off then the world won't get hot."

We adopted a penguin!

After a class vote, we decided to adopt a penguin via the WWF website. We are looking forward to a cuddly penguin joining our team next week.

We started to explore ice in the classroom and quickly noticed that the ice melted very quickly indeed. This led us to think carefully about the ice in Antarctica.

We made a Stop Motion video to record the ice melting over time.

Archer: "The ice is going to melt really quickly if the planet keeps heating up. If you turn the lights off it will stop getting hot."

Fliss: "The penguins are losing their homes."

Leonard: "We can help."

Next Wednesday, we look forward to welcoming you into our school for our Early Years PYP ACTION. The children have planned to hold an Arctic / Antarctica themed ice cream parlour for you to raise money for the WWF who will look after our adopted penguin. We hope many of you can make it to help the WWF carry out it's vital work to help support habitats and animals around the world.
