Central idea: Exploration leads to discoveries, opportunities and new understandings.

We have now fully entered our second line of inquiry, and have been focusing on exploration at different points in history, especially that which resulted from the building of the British Empire. Through this, we have seen how it rose but have also considered the impact it had on the lives of people within the Empire: it may have provided opportunities and understandings for some, whereas for others it marginalised and restricted.

As a writing focus, we have explored the newsworthy story of Captain James Cook, who discovered the Hawaiian islands (as well as, famously, Australia). On his third voyage to Hawaii, he and his crew managed to annoy the locals so much that, unfortunately, Cook was murdered! Clearly, exploration did not end well for him!
