Central idea: Shelter, for humans and animals, is a basic need.

Building snow dens for the polar bears.

"Let's have an ice cream shop where we give the money to help polar bears." - Kenzie

The children have protected the wildlife in our immediate environment by building a bug hotel. However, as we started to learn more about animal habitats it quickly became evident that more animals needed our help.

The children were captivated by the polar animals when exploring the WWF website. We decided to do a class vote and adopted our very own polar bear. Juniper class was sad to find out that much of the sea ice, which polar bears depend on, is melting away.

Tabitha wanted to help right away, she said: "We have to help to stop it melting or they won't have anywhere to rest."

Alfie said: "They will get sick and need help."

Dottie said: "Cubs need to rest in snow dens, what if it all melts then where will they go?"

After reading a book on ways to help our earth, Florence said: "I am going to make sure that I turn off the water when brushing my teeth to save some."

Samuel said: "All the lights can be turned off when we don't need them."

Alexandre said: "We should tell everyone this so they can do it too." So we have made posters to put around the school.

We recorded a stop motion video to track how quickly ice melted over time.
