Central idea: Personal choices can impact the environment.
As we have moved through our lines of inquiry, the children in Team Oak have become more knowledgeable, gaining a better understanding of the impact that humans have on our planet. This week while reading 'Old enough to save the planet' we learnt about two teenage sisters that have set up a website to combat plastic pollution called KIDS AGAINST PLASTIC. Following our research, we decided to also reuse old plastic bottles (that would otherwise find their way to landfill) to create something new.
Children have been busy carefully cutting and sticking vibrant coloured papers to bottles before applying a PVA varnish to make them water-resistant. The bottles will be taken home as a reminder that no matter what age you are, we can minimise plastic waste.
Archer: If we reuse the bottle they won't get to the Great Pacific garbage patch.
Sophia: If the bottles get to the sea it will be like the odd fish in the odd fish book. Turtles will eat the plastic and get sick and octopuses will get stuck in it. That's not right!
Throughout the week, we have continued to look at Andreas Gursky and his photography work. After creating a still life, Clara, Luana, Louie and Aidan created some exceptional artwork. First, they took photographs using the iPads before independently editing them. I am sure you will agree, they are outstanding!
