Central idea: Humans can explore their environment to understand the world around them.

As you know, we have started to delve into our new central idea for this module. The children have shown such curiosity about the natural world around them and are keen to share this with others. We took a nature walk around the school environment considering what we could see, hear and feel.

Max could feel: “the wind on my face.”

Alfie could feel: “cracking sticks” as we walked across the school field.

Philippa could see and feel the: “bumpy tree, this part is soft and this part is bumpy.”

Samuel could hear: “crunchy leaves” as we shuffled through the fallen leaves on the ground.

Here, some children chose to lay on the ground to listen carefully to the world around us. Others chose to stand with their eyes closed helping them focus on all of those sounds we may typically not hear well.  Seb said: "this is relaxing." Dottie said: "the birds are singing."

We have begun thinking about how these outdoor experiences can be recorded. We have started to sketch what we noticed in the environment. When sketching, the children were particularly interested in the varied textures that we felt and saw on our nature walk. We decided to capture these textures using clay and pressing nature into it. We are thrilled to be taking this exploration of the natural world on our school trip to Bedgebury National Pinetum and Forest next week.

Reminder:

On Tuesday, we will be visiting Bedgebury Pinetum. If you haven't already done so, please ensure your consent form is complete.

All children are required to wear school uniforms. All children will need a warm coat, hat and comfortable footwear.
