Central idea: People need specific skills and qualities to do different jobs.
Over the last fortnight we have been learning about Florence Nightingale and have worked hard to compile our learning into non-chronological reports. The children have been creative thinkers when constructing their non-chronological reports and have been excellent writers, demonstrating their learning about how Florence Nightingale has had an impact on our lives today. We are developing this learning into writing from the perspective of Florence Nightingale, and in doing so the children have considered carefully how she might have felt when treating soldiers. We have done hot-seating in our writing lessons and interviewed children who are pretending to be Florence Nightingale. All of the children have shown how they have thrown themselves into their learning by giving considered and thoughtful responses!
To develop our knowledge of careers and the skills and knowledge needed in these careers, for inquiry, we have pretended to be architects and design and build our own houses with junk modelling. Through making links with art, and our focus artist, the children have explored collage as an artistic technique and decorated their houses with a collage, using different media.
In maths we have been laying the foundations for multiplication and division by exploring equal groups, counting in 2's, 5's and 10's and making arrays. The children have been working hard to count equal groups and show their developing knowledge of multiplication.
We have also enjoyed a trip to Marden library. The children enjoyed learning more about the library and exploring the books!
