Juniper      Learning Update

Central idea: Shelter, for humans and animals, is a basic need.

We are currently exploring an inquiry into different types of shelters. We spoke about human shelters, and how many are different, but the important part of a shelter is that it keeps us warm, dry, safe and is strong.

Max said: My house has that pattern (pointing to an image of a tudor house) it is a tudor house made with wood and bricks.

We then looked at animal shelters, I was blown away with the children's knowledge of animals and where they would seek shelter. It was exciting to go around the school looking for animal shelters, the children were noticing lots of evidence of bugs and insects.

Willow: "There's a caterpillar nibble in those leaves, that's their food and shelter."

Mr Townsend had a birds nest from last year he kindly shared with us. He spoke to the children about how birds stay in their nest until their eggs are hatched and ready, they then flee the nest leaving that shelter behind and making a new one.

Dottie: "That's a bit like moving house but for birds."

We wanted to do something to protect the wildlife.

Kenzie: "We can make a shelter for all the bugs in our school."

Let's build a bug hotel!

So, off we went to collect all of the materials that we needed. Samuel: "We need sticks and leaves."

The structure of our bug hotel is made from wood and fixed together with nails. Seb said: "That will be strong enough, the wind won't knock it down."

Next week, we are going to be building the roof and using the DT resources to make holes in large sticks then filling the bug hotel ready to put it into our Early Years garden.
