5Chestnut  Learning Update

Central idea: Migrants and explorers both influence, and are influenced by, the world around us.

Sketches of typical Anglo-Saxon villages.

For our first line of inquiry, we explored an area that had experienced a drought which caused a river to dry up.  We discussed how this could impact the people living in that area, and what their options could be without a water source.  The children learnt that this can be a cause for people to migrate, and that in actual fact more people migrate because of drought, than they do because of flooding.  This then led us to think about how we could define and explain the concept of migration, which we then filmed in a short news report style clip.

In our maths learning, we have been learning equivalent fractions and decimals, thousandths as fractions, thousandths as decimals and how to order and compare decimals with up to 3 decimal places.  We have found that number lines really help our learning in class, as we can see that decimal numbers are numbers that have parts, and are not whole.  It would be great if you could spend some time discussing money with your child at home as this can also help them in their learning about decimals.

Please note that our trip to the British Museum is on Tuesday 12th March.  We will be visiting the museum to look at the Anglo-Saxon ship which was discovered at Sutton Hoo in Suffolk.  We will be using this learning experience in our work in the classroom too.
