Little Red Reading Hood
This week 2 Maathai have been exploring the story of 'Little Red Reading Hood'. The children have loved this alternative tale about a little girl who loved to reading but not all was as it seemed when a cunning wolf had a sinister plan! They have been working hard to write a similar story of their own with lots of different grammatical features.
W/B 16.09.24 Place Value
This week 2 Maathai completed their very first chapter in Maths. We have been focusing on numbers to 100 and working on place value. We have used the dienes to make various numbers and amounts, alongside part-part whole which we used to partition the numbers.
The History of Aviation
This week 2 Maathai have been learning all about the history of aviation. They looked at the many attempts people in history have made trying to fly. Further to this, they learned about the Wright brothers and why they play such a significant role in the history of flying. The children then built their very own paper aeroplanes and tested their designs to see how far they could fly and even timed how long they could stay in the air.
Did you know the very first flight lasted just 12 seconds!
RE
In RE, 2 Maathai have been learning about stories from the New Testament gospels that Jesus told. The Children have been drawing on their own experiences and understanding of storytelling and story writing. They discussed what a parable is and why they think religious stories are told.
My Christmas Star
This week 2 Maathai, started a new unit which is based on 'My Chritsmas Star'. We very much enjoyed our first experience day where we looked at the lyrics from the song 'Symphony' and picked out all of the words that related to sounds or music. To make our lesson one to remember, we all went up to the top hall for a karaoke session. The children loved hearing their voices on the mic and having a dance as their friends sang.
❤️ Remembrance Day ❤️
W/B 21.10.24
This week, 2 Maathai made their own poppy wreaths for remembrance day. They thought carefully about people they may wish to remember and wrote special messages of thanks. They began by drawing around their own hands, cutting them out and writing their messages on them. These have been put together and made into wreaths which will displayed around the school.
Science | Plants
W/B 4.11.24
This week in Science, 2 Maathai looked back at what essential components plants need to grow. Following this, they planted their very own cress seeds. The children are very excited to see if they can provide it with the right amount of water and light for it to grow. The children will all water their own pots and observe the changes to the seeds in the coming weeks.
Children In Need
W/B 11.11.24
2 Maathai had a blast marking Children In Need and fundraising by coming to school in there pyjamas. We started off the day by joining the BBC live stream event alongside thousands of other schools across the UK. Following on from this the children thought of their own gladiator names and the super powers they would like to have and how they could be used for good causes. In Maths we completed challenges all based on fundraising. To end the day the children were all put into 'dance mode' and danced along to Bluey and family- It was lots of fun and very tiring!
Cress!☘️
W/B 18/11/23
To conclude our topic of Plants, 2 Maathai harvested their cress and made cress sandwiches, which the majority all really enjoyed! Growing cress helped the children learn about the basic needs of plants (water, light, air, and soil) and how plants grow from seeds. It also provided a practical example of the life cycle of a plant, from seed to germination to mature plant, helping them further grasp the concepts of growth and change. It also encouraged them to make connections between science, nature, and healthy living. All of the children were very impressed with how well their cress grew and how nice it tasted!
R.E | Gurdwara Visit
Guru Granth Sahib Ji
WB 25.11.24
On Monday, 2 Maathai visited our local Gurdwara. It was really insightful, we learned that Sikh people take their socks and shoes off and wash their hands before entering the prayer room as well as covering their head. We also looked at the holy scripture 'Guru Granth Sahib Ji'. It was great comparing the Sikh religion with some of our own religions as we realised there are many similarities as well as some differences.
London Transport Museum
On Tuesday, we visited the London Transport Museum! It was great looking at how transport has changed and developed over time. The children loved getting on old buses and trains and thinking about how different it was then. We all loved being 'virtual train drivers' and finding out what buttons and controls the driver has to manage. We even had the chance to board a bus and sit in the drivers seat! Whilst at the museum we were able to watch a short film, which explained how important the subways and underground stations were during WW1 and WW2 as they were used as bomb shelters. Everyone learned a lot about the different modes of transport, their uses and just how lucky we are to be so well connected.
