On Wednesday Year 1 was 'Making Manor Memories' and went to Mudchute Farm, they had a fabulous time meeting and feeding all the farm animals. The children soaked in the views of the canals and skyscrapers of Canary Wharf whilst on the DLR train. We trekked through the park and reached Mudchute Farm. The children met a variety of animals including llamas, pigs, sheep, goats, ducks, geese and peacocks. After lunch time we visited the petting zoo, the children were very brave and fed the sheep and petted the very affectionate and playful goats. Year 1 was well behaved throughout the trip and we are very proud of them.

This week we had a special visitor! Thank you Lisa from 'Keep Britain Tidy' for coming to Stratford Manor to teach us about why recycling is so important. Did you know litter that is not recycled ends up in a landfill?
We investigated different pieces of household rubbish to figure out which materials they are made of by observing their properties, such as metal usually being shiny. We then sorted into three groups, recycle, reuse and rubbish. We were amazed and how some materials can be recycled and turned into something new. You can make pencil cases with recycled tires or bus seats.

We are learning about 'Recycling in Action' and the 'Sustainability' thread this term. The children are passionate about looking after our world they decided to clean up our playground and put litter in the bin. In class, we identified which materials can be recycled at home and which symbols to look for.
Check out some of our learning! Please see the photographs below.
Chip, chop, chippity chop! The children found the pulse and kept in time with each other.
We observed objects closely to identify the material they were made from, then put them in the correct recycling bag.
Bo'ruch Atah Hashem! The children learned how Jewish family and friends observe Shabbat. The challah was delicious.
Opaque or not opaque? The children made predictions about which materials light could pass through. We observed materials closely with a torch and the data we recorded surprised us.
Deines were used to build numbers to 40. We can partition numbers into tens and ones which makes counting more efficient. Amazing maths talk this week.
We learned how Hindu friends and family celebrate Raksha Bandhan and make our friends friendship bracelets.

Yesterday was World Book Day and the children had such a fun day dressing as their favourite characters and learning about their favourite authors. In the morning our families visited the classroom to read the children, we designed 'World Book Day' tokens and in the afternoon we visited Year 6. Check out our costumes!

This week we have learning about how plastic pollution is affecting the animals that live in the oceans. Animals like turtles might think that straws, plastic bags and water bottles are food. The children made pledges on how will act to tackle plastic pollution and save the animals. The children have pledged to pick up litter, throw rubbish in the bin and resuse and recycle plastic. We are looking forward to being creative and using plastic to make something new.

We hope you had a relaxing half-term and it is good to have the children back at Stratford Manor. Before the half-term break we went to the aquarium and designed a plan to make a moving picture inspired by the sea animals. With our cutting skills, we made sliders and levers out of materials. When we finished our product we proudly showed our friends and evaluated our moving pictures reflecting on what went well and what the challenges were.

This week it was Children's Mental Health Week, Internet Safety Day and we carried out some local field work. Please check out photographs of our learning. It has been such a busy week, thank you for your continued support and have a restful half term.
We carried out field work investigating pollution in the local area. We took photographic evidence of the litter around our school. It made us feel disrespected and we want change.
Sink or float? We carried out an investigation to find out which materials float or sink in water.
We are going to be writing an information text about seasonal changes. We are doing research to find out what happens to animals during the winter.
We sorted technology in chronological order and had discussions about how the Internet has changed and what if something online makes us feel uncomfortable.
We were creating art about things that matter to us like love, our friends and family and our school.

Year 1 have been learning about challenges and how to overcome then. They have been determined to succeed in school. We have been learning about shapes and patterns in Maths, writing about the seasons in English and naming the seven continents in Geography. Please check out our learning below.
Next week is Children's Mental Health Week and it is Internet Safety Day on Tuesday.

Please check out some photos of our learning below.
We used the VR headsets to visit the five oceans of the world. We were the describing them to our learning partner.
Maths is everywhere! We went on a shape hunt around the classroom to search for 2D and 3D shapes!
We have been observing materials closely using simple equipment. This week we described and sorted rocks by their properties such as smooth, rough, heavy and light.

1 Seacole worked as a team to decide on small steps to reach a bigger goal. Today's goal was to make a jam sandwich.
We identified the materials which the object is made from and then classified them according to their properties such as shiny or dull and soft or hard.
We learned about how Sikhs celebrate a baby's birth and the Sikh naming ceremony, Naam Karan. We looked for the meaning of our names influence our behaviour.

On Wednesday, the Year 1 children braved the sub-zero temperatures and travelled by the tube all the way to central London to visit the SEALIFE Aquarium. This term we are learning all about ‘Recycling in Action’ and the purpose of this visit was to develop empathy for the ocean’s wildlife that is affected by water pollution.
The Year 1 children were respectful for the duration for the whole trip. They were amazed by over 500 different species of animals from all over the world. The children enjoyed reading the signs and spotting the sea creatures in the tank and finding out which part of the world they come from. We even watched the penguins eat their fishy lunch!

The children worked so hard this week across the curriculum and demonstrated Stratford Manor's values. In Maths we have been learning about subtraction, this week we used number stories, ten frames, cubes and number lines to solve problems and in English we have been writing sentences inspired by 'The Storm Whale' we have been using the conjunction 'and' to add detail to our writing. Also in curriculum, we have been using our map skills to find London, the UK and Europe on a map and we found out which animals live in the surrounding oceans. In RE we have been looking closely at artefacts to find out about Sikhism. Please check out some photos of our learning below.
Hide and seek! We were playing hide and seek to learn prepositional language.
We looked at books and artefacts to learn about Sikhism.
We used maps to find out the city, country and continent we live in.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Although the first week back was short and sweet, it has been action-packed! We kicked off the new term with a 'Well-being Day and finished the week with a 'Curriculum Day' all about oceans to prepare us for the spring term's curriculum unit 'Recycling in Action'. On the well-being day the children pledged to make Stratford Manor the best community for playing and learning. Throughout the day we had circle times about the values, respect, community, responsibility, fairness, integrity, kindness and inclusion and worked together to agree on a class contract. We also created a florescent banner collaboratively about respect, see the picture below and we also kind to our bodies during yoga time.
Today was another busy day where we learning all about oceans. Did you know that there are mountains, caves and volcanoes in the oceans? Some other fun facts, starfish can regrow their arms, and can have up to 40! Also male seahorses carry eggs and shoot them out in a stream. The oceans are such a vast, mysterious and interesting part of nature that we must look after. There were so many activities inlcuding visiting the oceans on VR headsets, reading non-fiction texts together and creating scultputes of sea creatures in the style of Judith Scott.
