Year 1 Summer

Puppets

Friday 12th July 2024

Over the last few weeks the Year 1 children have been researching different types of puppets and exploring which materials are best for making a puppet. The Year 1 decided felt is the best material because it is soft and it can move when you put your hand inside it. After that the designed how they want their puppet to look and then they sewed felt together to make a hand puppet. Sewing was so challenging at first but the Year 1 children were so determined and learned a new skill. Another children was cutting the fabric in to glue on to the puppet, we found out that it was not possible to follow our designs as they were too complex. Well done Year 1, the outcome of the DT project was a success.

ELECTION day

Wednesday 3rd July 2024

This week all the children of Stratford Manor have been learning about the General Election. Each class named their political party and delivered their manifesto in the assembly. The bottom hall was transformed into a polling station and the children votes for the party with their favourite policies.

After some time brainstorming and deliberated on the policies they want to implement, there was a clear winner... Year 1 are 'The Pet Party' and they have been campaigning for a school pet to look after. Best of luck in the election Year 1!

NATURE SCAVENGER HUNT

Friday 14th June 2024

For Monday's Science lesson the children were learning how to identify and name a variety of trees and plants in the local area. After a quick stroll, we arrived at Abbey Gardens. The gardens are locally run and free for everyone in Stratford to use. There were so many different types of plants to find and explore. Here are some of the plants we named include: poppy, marigold, daisy, sedum, mountain flax, raspberry, mint, pine echium, yarrow, nasturium, strawberry, maple sycamore. With our learning partner we described the plants and compared their features.

Week 3

Friday 3rd May 2024

On Tuesday Year 1 went on an educational visit to the National Portrait Gallery in central London. The purpose of the visit was to learn about facts about Mary Seacole and the significance of her work. This term's curriculum unit is called 'Leaving Home' and Mary Seacole was a bold and brave woman who left her home in Jamaica to help sick and injured people worldwide.

Mary Seacole's portrait had gone missing! The gallery staff gave the Year 1 some clues. They listened carefully to a history book about Mary Seacole and looked at some artefacts then off they went to search for the only portrait of Mary Seacole in the world. In no time at all the portrait was found, and the class discussed the conditions soldiers were living in during the Crimean war and how Mary saved so many lives.

Week 2

Friday 26th April 2024

On Monday we celebrated Earth Day by switching off all devices in our school. It opened our eyes to how much we rely on technology and we are becoming aware of how much energy we use unnecessarily. Instead of using the lights, we can open the blinds. We know we must switch off the interactive whiteboards and Chromebooks when they are not in use.

Geography

We used an atlas to explore Mary Seacole's voyage from Jamaica.

Science

This term we will observe how plants change over time. Each week, we will gather data.

RE

To help us understand Hinduism and karma, we explored how actions have consequences by watching dominoes and playing snake and ladders.

History/computing

On the Chromebooks, we used Nearpod and AI to learn why Mary Seacole was such a significant doctress.

Week 1

Friday 19th April 2024

It has been great welcoming the Year 1 children back to Stratford Manor! In Science we have been observing nature closely and noticed that the season has changed to spring. Plants have started to grow from the ground, above us we can see new leaves and blossoms growing on the trees. Also the weather has been unpredictable, we have experienced sun, hail, rain, clouds and wind in the same week.

We have also started our new curriculum unit 'Leaving Home' and the school threads 'Our Rights' and 'Peace and Conflict'. To kick off the unit, we have been learning about the life of Mary Seacole and her contributions. She helped so many sick and injured soldiers. We created our own natural medical remedy by juicing lemons and pounding ginger to make a ginger-lemon tonic. It was zingy but delicious.
