Week Beginning 5th December 2022
This week we have been making Emergency vehicles from recycled boxes as a follow up from last week and they do look really interesting. We had another opportunity of having a London Underground train driver called Nathan to come in and talk to us about their role in helping us. We learnt that the ticket officers and the train service controllers communicate with each other whenever school children go on a trip to ensure that they are kept safe during their entire journey on the train and in the station. We found out that each train has 8 carriages. He said that we are one of their most important customers who use the trains. Nathan was really impressed with our knowledge and understanding of how trains operate as we spoke about always hearing the phrase " mind the gap" when we are on the platforms at the station. We have finished making our own recycled Christmas tree. In Maths we were looking at making our own stampoline patterns for number 5.
These are some of the emergency vehicles we made.
Week Beginning 28th November 2022
This week we have been learning about Recycling and its importance. We now know which items can be recycled. We have started to use some of the recycling items we collected to make a few things for ourselves. We made our own recycling Monster and we are in the process of making our own recycled Christmas tree. We are going to decorate our tree with baubles that we made ourselves and other things we can put on it.We used part of our outdoor area to showcase our drawings and writing skills and played shop with our friends. We did some writing around recycling as well. We made our own recycling instruments and we will be making emergency vehicles from boxes as well. Watch this space!
Week Beginning 21st November 2022
This week our focus was around fire fighters, we began the week by registering as fire fighter and we carried out some drills to make sure we were fit enough to be fire fighters. We made our own fire helmets and labelled the different parts of a fire truck. Then we did some observational drawingS of our own fire trucks that was hard work but we tried our best! We were so lucky to have a retired soldier come in and tell us the different ways soldiers help us. His name is Steve . He told us he was a soldier for 24 years. He did jobs like helping people get food in the war, helping in Ethopia , in the Olympics by giving out tickets and controlling the crowds, he helped put up temporary shelters. Blake asked " what does oppression mean? showing his great listening skills and Steve gave a simple answer that the children understood. Well done to him! The children said they would like to be a fire fighter when they grow up. They also understood the dangers of fire and how they should keep safe. We had a really good week.
Week Beginning 14th November 2022
This week we have continued with our topic "People Who Help Us" . We began this week by talking about anti-bullying and wore odd socks to celebrate this year's theme. We focussed on the police and looked at the different emergency services we have. First we made our own police badges and used our knowledge of numbers to create our own unique warrant number. We now know what number to call in an emergency. We can explain what a police officer does and what uniform they wear. Then we labelled a diagram showing what police officers wear. We made our own finger prints using different colours. In our role play area we have a Doctor's Surgery and we have been looking after many patients and checking their welfare. We used tweezer to collect evidence from a grave and thought about the different numbers we could pick up helping us to develop our fine motor skills. It has been a really busy week for us in Reception.
