Year 6 Spring

Science Day

During Science Day Year 6 had a fantastic time making a temporary compass using magnets, milk bottle lid, a steel needle and a bowl of water. Children investigated the impact of a permanently magnetised needle which can spin freely. They looked at the effect on the needle as the effect on the needle wears off after a while.

Children also investigated animals, their variations and how they adapt to their environment over time. They did this by making a model moth and hiding this in the environment so that predators could not find it. By playing a predator and prey children gained knowledge about how species survive and reproduce in the evolution process.

World Book Day

World Book Day is a fantastic occasion at Stratford Manor where children dress up as their favourite book characters. It's an opportunity to foster a love for reading and literature while also encouraging creativity and imagination. Year 6 participated in World Book Day activities throughout the day. We ended our day by pairing up with Year 1 and reading our favourite stories to them. This proved beneficial for everyone.

Henry Moore Art

Year 6 were inspired by artwork that drew inspiration from Henry Moore's Second World War Tube Drawings. Henry Moore, a renowned British sculptor, created a series of drawings during World War II depicting scenes from London's Underground stations used as bomb shelters during the Blitz. We started by doing a life sketch of a scene from the Tube  before children used etching as a technique in their artwork. Etching is a printmaking process in which lines or images are incised or engraved into a metal plate.

The Human Body

Year 6 have done a series of lessons all about the human body. They include activities in which children explored the structure of the heart and lungs and learn about the double circulation of blood through the lungs and the rest of the body. They then carried out an experiment to find out the impact of exercise on their heart.

Stratford East Theatre

Year 6 were lucky enough to get their hands on tickets to 'A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings' at Stratford East Theatre last week. Puppetry, music and magic brought this story by Gabriel Garcia Marquez to life on the stage and certainly provided a lively adventure for the imagination.

The play involved a child with a sweltering fever, a dog chasing its tail, a mother dreaming of a new broom and a father gazing out to sea. To the children's surprise, the sea rose up like a bolt of lightning and a very old man with enormous wings crashed to earth in a flurry of feathers!

As part of our Unit on Seeking Refuge Year 6 visited the Imperial War museum. Children had the opportunity to explore the new Second World War Galleries, which looks at the human side of a conflict that affected millions of people around the world. Through the stories of real people from across the globe, children discovered the causes and consequences of the Second World War.

Junior Citizenship Scheme

We went to the Tate and Lyle Factory based near the London City Airport to take part in the Junior Citizen Scheme. This is a partnership initiative aimed at giving young children the skills to deal with a wide range of emergency situations, and to enable them to make a valued contribution to their local community through good citizenship.

The session covered short interactive sessions with trained members of the society on the following:

The children found the experience very useful.

As part of the whole school project, Year 6 spent the first day of the new term thinking about our school values. We spent an extensive period of time creating a class pledge based on the values. We then created a whole class artwork based on inclusion which can be seen in display at school.
