When an acid and a base react together in the right amounts then a neutral salt and water is formed. These two products have a pH of 7 (neutral).
Remember that the salt made depends on the acid used.
Hydrochloric acid, HCl, makes a chloride as the salt
Sulfuric acid, H2SO4 , makes a sulfate as the salt
Nitric acid, HNO3 , makes a nitrate as the salt
The neutralisation reactions you are expected to know about are:
acid + metal hydroxide
acid + metal oxide
acid + metal carbonate
acid + metal hydrogen carbonate
When acids react with metal carbonates and metal hydrogen carbonates then carbon dioxide gas is produced as well as a salt and water.
