PERCY JACKSON & THE LOST OLYMPIAN
Benjamin (7.1)
The story begins with Percy turning 16, and a prophecy that could destroy Olympus is coming. Kronos has revived in Luke’s body and now has a huge army. After a long battle, Luke finally realises he was wrong, and takes over his body again for a few seconds, telling Percy his weak spot and finally defeating Kronos. I found it most interesting when Luke changes from good to evil, it’s shocking! Throughout the series he constantly tries to kill Percy but then suddenly has a redemption.
I KNOW WHY THE CAGED BIRD SINGS
Selorm (7.4)
This is the author Maya Angelou’s autobiography so the story starts with her introducing her childhood, when I guess she is about 11 years old. It is set in the 1930s in America when the country was very prejudiced against black people. As the book continues, she is very brave to move away from her family where she has suffered abuse. She goes to live with Vivian Baxter then in the end she goes back to live with her Momma.
THE FINAL YEAR
Hussain (8.4)
This is a verse novel about a boy called Nate who is in his last year of primary school. He has 2 younger brothers and a mother with health problems so he has a lot of responsibilities in his family. I found parts of the book depressing, like when one of the brothers is in hospital, but also really energetic. I really enjoyed the part where he likes his new Year 6 teacher Mr Joshua who gets him to really like poetry.
A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS
James (8.2)
The story starts off describing the Baudelaire Orphans, whose parents were killed in a fire. Klaus is the oldest and he tries to protect his younger siblings Sunny and Violet. The part I found most interesting was when the Baudelaire’s went down a mysterious darkened staircase. This had real plot twists and the tension was increasing all the time. The book is set in Britain in the early 2000s. I also liked the character of Gunther who is an Orphanage worker.
SLAWTER
Raheem (7.1)
This is the third book in the Demonata series by Darren Shan. It starts off with Dervish getting nightmares from his time fighting Lord Loss. The most interesting part of the story is when he gets asked by the legendary movie star Davida if he can help her to make a film about demons. In my opinion the story has three main protagonists: Dervish - the cunning guardian, Grubbs – the brave one, and Billie – the funny guy. There’s a lot of different settings but the main one is Dervish’s mansion.
MORTAL ENGINES
Romaan (7.1)
The story starts with talking about London, with the main characters Tom and Hester trying to chase down a small mining town. In the middle, a character called Shrike is introduced, who used to fight in the battlefields but Hester keeps thinking that she keeps reminding him of the trauma. Tom is an interesting character, he normally cleans the London Museum. I think he is a person that likes to ask questions a lot. I loved the description of the part where Tom and Hester were on a plane and testing the controls.
