Sophronia Morehouse

Sophronia Morehouse, the wife of ephraim, was 83 years old when she died in 1885. She was a gracious giver to her church and to Syracuse University.

Her obituary indicates that she was considered the cornerstone of the methodist Church often relieving it of financial embarrassment. At the time of remodeling of the methodist house of worship she was the largest subscriber, and after others had given what they should, she whipped out the whole church dept of over $700, making the society a present of the mortgage.”

She also donated 30000 to Syracuse University. According to an article found at the Onondaga Historical Association, her decision to provide this endowment was the result of a sermon on the subject ¨öf higher education under christian influences, wand the duty and importance of persons of means consecrating a portion of their property for the endowment of such institutions¨
