Captain James L. Wentworth


Captain James L. Wentworth, 1869-1958, he worked on the canal for most of his life period. His obituary about his life has more of this information on him: “Mr. Wentworth was born on the barge “ Adirondacks “ are west street in Syracuse and most of his boyhood was divided between his home in Liverpool and his home on the barge. At the age of 14 he drove mules and horses on the Erie Canal towpath. Later he worked at the barge canal hauling ice for peoples ice com. His father was killed by a lighting bolt while standing on the deck of a barge. Mr. Wentworth earned his pilot’s license as a young man and was thoroughly familiar with the states system of waterways. He stayed on the water on barges until his retirement in 1937.
