Charles Raupach

Charles Raupach was born in 1861 and died in 1931. He came to Liverpool from Cologne, Germany to Liverpool in 1881, when he was 21 years old, at a time when many German people settled in Liverpool. Charles had learned the trade of willow weaving in Germany and was known in Liverpool as the “ Artist of the Willow Industry “. In addition to the traditional willow baskets he also wove chairs, settees, chaise lounges, baby carriages, urns, ferneries, tables, footstools and cat and dog baskets. As you stand at the grave of Charles Raupach, facing Tulip Street, you can see the building at 908 Tulip Street where he lived.

Biographical Sketch: Charles Raupach was born in 1860 in Cologne, Germany. He came to America in 1881, when he was 21 years old. He settled in Liverpool, NY because that is where most Germans settled at the time. At the time in Liverpool, he's known as the “Artist of the Willow Industry”. During his time alive in Liverpool, the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge began. Also, the Statue of Liberty is given to the Americans from France.
