YEAR 6

Overview

Year 6 begins with a unit on Samba. Children learn about the history and development of Samba, with its roots in slavery and its importance in Brazilian culture. They learn the names and recognise the sounds of the different instruments and how to play them individually before creating a Samba Reggae.  Children learn how to play together and how to compose their own paradhinas (breaks).

Later in the year, Year 6 learn about the history and function of music in film, identifying composing techniques. They listen to and analyse examples of film music. Working in small groups, they plan and perform their own film soundtrack using classroom instruments. They return to Orff classroom instruments in their exploration of the history of the Sea Shanty, learning to improvise over simple melodies.

Finally, they compose and perform their own Leavers Song.
