YEAR 3

Overview

Children in Year 3 begin to apply their musical understanding in learning to play the recorder. The children are given an instrument by the school (kindly gifted by the PTFA) which they are then allowed to keep at the end of the year.

Early in the year, they are taught the basics of playing the recorder (posture, breath control, finger placement) and, at the same time, learn about rhythmic notation (how long or short notes are) and pitch notation (how high or low notes are). In the summer term, they perform for parents.

Throughout the year, children continue to explore some of the Elements of Music as they practise the important skills of keeping a steady beat, listening and working with others. Later in the year, they are introduced to Orff classroom instruments (xylophones, metallophones, glockenspiels) for the first time.
