"Leaders are learners, willing to learn from their mistakes, make adjustments and forge ahead."

~ Dr. Moses Simuyemba

LEADERSHIP

Lake Forest Transition students develop and demonstrate their leadership skills every day.

Our students are leaders in the classroom when they follow directions and stay focused on their own work while setting a good example for their peers.

Leaders work well with others. Leaders also support their peers in the pursuit of individual goals. We love to see these leadership qualities in our students.

Every day our students are going to new places and trying new things. Sometimes they will make mistakes, but learning from those mistakes and continuing to show growth is what great leaders do.

At West Campus we strive to create an environment where students feel confident to learn and grow from their mistakes. We are ALL works in progress.

"A person always doing his or her best becomes a natural leader, just by example." ~ Joe Dimaggio

SPEECH TIPS WITH SAM

Our Speech-Language Pathologist, Samantha Medland, offers helpful tips that can be easily used in everyday situations.

There are many qualities that are important in becoming a good leader. Recently, we have been focusing on self-awareness, specifically knowing your likes and dislikes as well as strengths and areas for improvement. Talking to students about interests and strengths as well as recognizing when they may need help and how to ask for it are great ways to foster self-awareness skills.

VOCATIONAL CORNER

Diana Beckman, Vocational Coordinator shares, “Here at Lake Forest Transition, our students have been dedicated to be active as leaders and motivators for completing job applications, checking emails for an employers next steps, following up with employers with phone calls, preparing and participating in mock & real interviews, and accepting job offers.”

COOKING

Cooking is one of the important life skills taught at West Campus. In cooking class, students choose a recipe, budget for the recipe, shop at various grocery stores for ingredients, and follow the recipe while learning about kitchen safety.

After making a calzone for herself, Gillian took the initiative to make another one for Nick.

Recipe of the Month

Our goal for cooking instruction is to make recipes which are uncomplicated, and that most anyone can complete. The Recipe of the Month for February is Nick's class's Chicken Pot Pie.

For this comfort food recipe we substituted a double refrigerated pie crust for the crescent rolls (placing one on the bottom and one on top). This is a very simple, quick recipe and was a big hit!

THURSDAYS AT LAKE FOREST COLLEGE

Before the pandemic, an important part of our weekly routine was to spend every Thursday at Lake Forest College. It is hard to believe that it has been two years since we've visited this beautiful college campus.

This semester, we are excited to be able to return. For now, we are spending our day in the Sports and Recreation Center where we have been given the large trophy room to use for academics and lunch. We also have access to multiple gyms, the weight room, track, cardio equipment, locker rooms, and more!
