Related Service Corner: Tips and Tools for Winter Break
During our short December month we are working on applying concepts and vocabulary learned this fall to a greater variety of situations as well as thinking through which situations require which concepts. Winter break can provide many moments of challenge for our young adults. Travel, vacation, and increased social gatherings come with greater demands for flexibility, perspective-taking, and executive functioning skills. Here is a great article by Michelle Garcia Winner with some tips for how to help your child navigate. Although this is written with a focus on travel/vacation, many of these same tips could be applied if you are hosting a social gathering or joining extended family. If you haven’t done so already, you may wish to look explore the Social Thinking website more after reading the article - they have some great free articles and webinars!
Another resource to support executive functioning skills for both winter break and anytime is the free CanPlan app. This app allows for breaking down tasks step by step with pictures, as well as setting reminders for doing tasks. This is really helpful for building independence as well as reducing those inevitable power struggles that occur when we give our young adults too many reminders or verbal directions about how something should be done.
