Gobble Up Competition
The Ag Business class participated in the Gobble Up Competition this year. This was a new thing we wanted to try this year since we were learning about how to start a business and all the things that come with it. We created a dish that we called "Turkey Delight", and we also came up with a business name which was "The Barn". Our class split into different groups to work on certain areas of the project such as the introduction, product description, marker analysis, market planning, and how turkey is nutritional. We fed samples to the high school students and gave them a survey to fill out when they were done. We recieved first place and got a visit from members of the Agriculture Literacy Foundation, Iowa Turkey Marketing Council, and the U.S. Poultry Foundation. Along with the visit, we will get to go on a virtual turkey farm tour.
Bioswale Project
Derek Namanny from the Field Service Bureau in Des Moines and Erin Ogle from the Taylor County Water Quality Initiative Project came to our school and presented the project that they are collaborating with the school on. They talked to us about the urban and rural affects of water runoff. They also asked us if we would be willing to help plant a variety of plugs of wild grasses and flowers in an area around the school. We took a day to go outside to prepare, plant, and water these plants. We also walked around the walking trail by the school to look at another project they did with the City of Lenox.
Case Activities
CASE is the Curriculum for Agriculture Science Education. Through the curriculum, students are able to work through real life scenairos and learn through hands on activities. Students above are going through an activity that highlights the importance of students going through competitions and CDE's.
