Description:
Students learn best when they are relaxed, alert and present. Through cultivating daily routines such as journaling, reflection and breath work, students can dive deeper into literature and discussions because they've activated their parasympathetic nervous systems, or their "rest and digest" responses. Cultivating emotional resilience and self-regulation are benefits of regular meditation and breath work for both students and teachers as well. In this class we will learn the science behind why these types of meditations work, dig into these practices ourselves, and discuss numerous ways of working them into daily routines and units as well.

Description:
For some mathematics teachers, making the shift from using Microsoft Word to Google Docs has been a challenge due to the nature of the content. It is not as easy to create math equations and graphs. However, with the help of a tool called equatIO, teachers are able to use proper math notation for functions and equations when creating content in the Google World - Google Docs, Google Slides, Google Sheets. Teachers also have the ability to create graphs right from equatIO. For those teachers who are looking for a tool to help streamline the process of creating math content to share with students, this workshop is for you.
During this hands-on workshop, participants will have an opportunity to create with equatIO and learn how easy it is to move digitally with their mathematics. Participants will be asked to produce digital artifact that could be use in their curriculum with equatIO. NOTE: Bring laptop/chromebook with the latest Chrome browser so you can apply the skills learned! Participants must have the ability to download the equatIO chrome extension in order to participate in this workshop. (Presenter will help assist with getting equatIO)

Description:
In this class, we will explore the startup and progression of writer’s workshop in the K-2 classroom. Through literature and lesson examples as well as various writing activities, we will break down the very important first weeks of writing when children begin to view themselves as authors. Next, we will dive into lessons that explore an author’s ideas, voice and word choice. Getting young writers to put their thoughts down in a clear and understandable way is sometimes more challenging than anything else. We will go over some simple lessons to improve conventions and build better sentences as well as help students develop and organize their thoughts. We will also discuss strategies to help teach students to write topic sentences with supporting details and provide closure to those important opinion, narrative and informative writing pieces. Participants will be asked to submit written responses after viewing the course to complete the workshop for 15 PDPs. The class is self-directed. A one hour live meet will be held at the start of the workshop on 2/3/22 and towards the end of the course dates on 3/22/22 with the instructor.

Executive Functioning is the foundation of many of the struggles our students face each and every day. In this workshop, we will discuss common executive function weaknesses and how they exhibit themselves in the classroom. We will then discuss ways to tailor our lessons, activities, and homework to better assist those students who struggle with prioritization, time management, task initiation, and other skills. We will begin the workshop by taking a quiz you could give to your own students to discover your (and their) strengths and weaknesses.

Description:
All classrooms are striving to meet students needs after months of disrupted instruction. Especially in math, students’ progress has been impacted by the last few years of schooling. In order to avoid sustaining gaps or creating inequities by relying on ‘remediation for some’, instead consider the routine of ‘acceleration for all’. Acceleration is moving forward with grade-level instruction and providing just-in-time lessons in prerequisite skills and concepts from previous grades when they’re needed, and is recommended by MA DESE. Join this session for a quick routine that can be applied to any math curriculum/routine! This workshop is recommended for teachers of math in grades 1-8.

A one hour live meet will be held at the start of the workshop on 1/11/22 and towards the end of the course dates on 3/1/22 with the instructor.

We also want our students to experience other people's stories and make comparisons and connections with their own lived experiences. In this workshop, participants will learn how to select age (yes - for middle and high school!) appropriate novels and then create units and lessons. These novels are a great way to expose students to meaningful and authentic vocabulary. All world language teachers are invited to attend and lots of examples in Spanish will be given. Middle, High, Novice and Intermediate teachers will walk away with ideas about how to choose novels and create lessons and start a classroom library.

Early literacy means helping our young students to develop the interest/skills they need to become successful readers. With thoughtful and creative planning, early literacy can be adapted to meet the needs of every student in the early childhood classroom. Within these two workshops, the focus will cover whole-class rich literacy experiences along with appropriate, engaging ways that will support students with varied abilities.
I am happy to say that I will have two guest speakers joining me for this important skill. This workshop will be presented over two days. The first workshop will focus on introductions, ideas/activities for adapting read alouds and my first guest speaker. Susan Taylor, M.Ed works as a special education teacher. She works with young children in an integrated setting as well as a sub-separate classroom. Her experience covers many years of knowledge and dedication. She will show you how she makes adaptive books (from various picture books) that are engaging, interactive and creative. The second workshop will continue with more ideas/ activities for creative ways that encourage literacy. In addition, my second guest, Kim Brisbois worked as a teaching assistant in a sub-separate classroom for many years. She has many years of experience with children who have autism. Her love and dedication led her to adopt a boy with autism. She will share her thoughts and demonstrate how she (and the school) integrates technology and visual supports to aide in his learning. What a journey! Please join me as we explore many ways that will encourage and nurture early literacy development for all our young students.

Description:
Although students with Language Based Learning Disabilities (LBLD) may be challenged across the board, they CAN learn in General Education & Special Education settings.
LBLDs refer to an array of challenges related to understanding and using oral and written language. This creates an across the board challenge. We will initially think about what you may see demonstrated in the classroom. We'll next consider other potential challenges such as Attention, Memory and Executive Functioning. Resources will be shared on Instructional Practices, Environment & Routines. Come explore how we can focus on strengths & create optimal learning environments where ALL students can thrive.

In this workshop we will unpack the Vision Statement and Guiding Principles of the new MA Curriculum Framework for World Languages. There will be time to discuss social justice and social emotional learning as well. Participants will also come away with ideas on how to begin the process of aligning the courses they teach. There will be more emphasis on the Guiding Principals in this session so for those who took this workshop over the summer, you will find it to be different. New classroom examples will also be given.
