MLP - Multilingual Learner Program (Formerly known as ESOL – English for Speakers of Other Languages)
MLs - Multilingual Learners
MLPS - Multilingual Learner Specialist (School Level)
MLPC - Multilingual Learner Program Coordinator (District Level) - in LCSD = ML Program District Lead
Academic language - The language found in a variety of academic texts; the language used in debates, poetry, and a wide range of oral discourse; the language of formal writing and discipline-specific discourse, vocabulary, and syntax found in math, literature, science, and social studies.
ACCESS - Assessing Comprehension and Communication in English State-to-State for English language learners.
Bilingual education - An educational program in which instruction is provided in two languages. there are three prototypical kinds of bilingual education: (1) transitional bilingual education, (2) maintenance or one-way developmental bilingual education, and (3) dual language education, or two-way immersion. These types of bilingual education programs differ in their target populations, goals, program structures, and anticipated outcomes. (THIS IS NOT OFFERED AT LCSD.)
ELLs – English Language Learners - Students in the United States who are learning English in addition to their home language or other languages they may speak. Also referred to as English learners (ELs), bilingual learners, and multilingual learners (MLs). Previously referred to as limited English proficient (LEP).
ELP – English Language Proficiency
ESL - English as a second language - Refers to programs or classes that target students identified as multilingual learners, with the goal of promoting the language development and social integration of these students. These programs are also referred to as English as an additional language (EAL), English as a new language (ENL), and English for speakers of other languages (ESOL).
Home Language - the language(s) spoken in the home by significant others (e.g. family members, caregivers, etc).
Home Language Survey (HLS) - the instrument used to identify language learners at the time of enrollment.
LEP – Limited English Proficient
Long-Term ML -
Newcomer - any non-English speaking student who has never attended American schools and is new to the country.
Primary Language (L1) - first or native language spoken by an individual
WIDA – World-class Instructional Design and Assessment. A consortium of states dedicated to the design and implementation of high standards and equitable educational opportunities for English language Learners. It supports the development of academic language and achievement for linguistically diverse students
