This term, our journey through the transdisciplinary theme ‘How We Organise Ourselves’ has been an exciting and enriching experience. We focused on the central idea: ‘The lives of significant individuals affect society today’. To explore this, the children researched three remarkable individuals who have made a lasting impact on society.
Our young learners began by delving into the life of Florence Nightingale, discovering her incredible contributions during the Crimean War. They learned how she improved hospital conditions by ensuring cleanliness, providing beds for every patient, and offering compassionate care and nourishment. We then compared her life to that of Mary Seacole, examining the challenges they faced and the significant changes they both brought to society. Inspired by their stories, the children wrote narratives in the style of Vlad and the Florence Nightingale Adventure, showcasing the remarkable impact these women had.
Next, we explored the life of Martin Luther King Jr., learning about his unwavering determination to challenge injustice and fight for equality. His dream of a fair and just society continues to inspire change today.
In DT and Art, we channelled our creativity to honour the influential figures we studied. The children designed pop-art-style dye prints featuring one of these historical figures and crafted puppets to help retell Vlad and the Florence Nightingale Adventure.
Our second line of inquiry focused on ‘How individuals may impact society today’. To deepen their understanding, the children wrote biographies on Martin Luther King Jr., exploring how his fight against segregation transformed people’s perspectives and reinforced the importance of equality
In our final inquiry, ‘How we can influence today’s society’, the children took action by writing letters to Mr. Filsell, suggesting fundraising ideas for a local charity supporting hospitals—continuing Florence Nightingale’s legacy of care. We are eager to discuss their ideas further and see how we can bring them to life. Stay tuned for updates!
