Within Physical Education at Leigh Academy Blackheath, our pupils study both practical and theoretical concepts in each module, to provide them with the opportunity to engage in a range of physical activities and sports, as well as expose them to the relevant content that surrounds these.
Practically, our pupils have undertaken at least two of the following activities: team building, trampolining, netball, handball, and badminton.
So far this year, our Year 7 pupils have been introduced to: the principles of sportsmanship and gamesmanship, in relation to the desired behaviours we wish to see in all lessons, and the manner in which professional sportspeople can lead the way in acting as role models for the younger generation.
Secondly, pupils have learned about the components of fitness. These components will be referred back to throughout their time at LAB and are therefore a necessary part of the year 7 curriculum.
The musculoskeletal system has been the topic of focus so far this year, and pupils are now aware of the major muscles and bones within the human body. Pupils will use this knowledge to understand how sporting actions are made possible through the contraction of muscle, and the movement of bone at a joint.
Throughout the first two modules, our year 9 pupils will have gained an understanding of the socio-cultural influences that prevent and allow individuals to participate in sport and physical activity. Additionally, commercialised sport has been explored, with pupils gaining an insight into the ways in which major brands gain exposure through lucrative deals with the world’s most famous sportspeople.
Our GCSE PE cohort have truly hit the ground running and fully engaged with the course content thus far. In the coming month, pupils will ensure their non-examination assessments (for both practical and coursework-based units) allow them to enter their exam in the best possible position. Parents, please keep an eye out for opportunities that we truly recommend your child engages with, to allow them to walk into their exams next year in a strong position.
