Clubs and societies are of great importance to us at Leigh Academy Blackheath and last module saw over half of our community attend at least one regularly, each week.
Teachers dedicate their time before, during, and after the school day to share their passions and interests with our pupils. With 31 different opportunities on offer this module, we look to harness their desire to master a skill, learn a language, represent the academy, or simply be physically active in a safe environment.
A pupil voice is held each module by our student government to see which other opportunities we could offer them going forwards. Typically, if we cannot deliver a club or society ‘in house’ we would look to take advantage of the areas of expertise within our local community.
The well-being of our pupils is of utmost importance. In such a turbulent time within our pupils’ lives, we endeavour to provide them with opportunities each and every day, to support their physical, mental, and social wellbeing.
Pupils truly value the time their teachers devote to providing co-curricular opportunities for them. It is clear that the clubs and societies programme has helped our pupils develop skills and interests outside of the classroom. Additionally, specific sports clubs and multi-activity mornings/evenings ensure our pupils place importance on regular participation in physical activity.
Our aim, moving forwards, is to engage an even greater number of our LAB community in our clubs and societies programme. Additionally, fixtures will play an important role, with pupils chosen to represent LAB who demonstrate the Values in, and around our Academy.
Debate Society
Debate society, run by the eloquent and passionate Mr Pinches, teaches children the value and art of debate. Debating improves critical thinking skills, structuring of ideas, and self confidence.
Ever needed to get your way? Debate society can teach you the ever beneficial persuasive and rhetorical skills needed to get your own way in today’s rapidly growing society as well as the prolific ways to generate and strengthen your ideas and opinions which can help get your point across.
After joining Debate society, I have learnt the importance of my opinion and how to emphasise with others opinions without discrediting my own. So, if you are interested in learning how to argue with others professionally or just want to know how to develop your own persuasive dialogue, come and join us today because your opinion deserves to be taken seriously, and we can teach you how to do that!
