,Over Module 1 and 2 the Performing Arts department have been extremely impressed with the commitment and enthusiasm from all students, and we are grateful for all the amazing work that has been produced!
As a team, we were just as excited as the students were to get back into the music rooms and drama studios thus year, and start showcasing all the students' performance skills.
The students are back in the swing of things already, working extremely hard in all their lessons. The team have thoroughly enjoyed listening and watching all the wonderful work that has been produced during the module.
In music, students have been working on their listening skills, using DR SMITH to support identifying music features in varying genres.
Students have also been developing their practical skills on the keyboard, ukulele and guitar. Year 7 have been learning how to play Folk, year 8 Reggae and Year 9 Blues songs.

GCSE music and drama students have been busy preparing for upcoming assessments!
We have started studying our set play in GCSE drama: “Blood Brothers”. Blood Brothers is a play written by Willy Russell and revolves around twin boys (Mickey and Edward) who are separated at birth and brought up in completely different environments in the city. The play is set in Liverpool in the 1960s.
Here are some of our GCSE Drama students acting out scenes from the play....

Performing Arts Extra-curricular Clubs
LAB Performing Arts department are passionate about having as many opportunities as possible for children to experience and develop their performing arts skill. The following clubs take place and will continue to take place in January:
Monday
3pm - 4pm: Ukulele Band
KS3 students have all had the opportunity to learn the ukulele in their weekly music lessons. From the success and passion of many students, we have decided to offer a Ukulele club from January 2022 for students to progress on this instrument further. Students will learn a range of different songs from a variety of decades and genres.
Tuesday
3pm - 4pm: Music Band Sessions/Music Tech
This is a unique music club where students can use our top quality instruments and equipment to set up their own bands and use our practice rooms with the mentoring of our teachers. Students can also continue learning an instrument or learn how to play a new instrument. Next term we will also blend Music Band with Music Tech, thereby giving students the opportunity to learn how to record, edit and mix their own songs or produce new songs from loops and samples.
Tuesday
3pm - 4pm: Musical Theatre Club
Musical Theatre Club is a chance for students to practice their singing, dancing and acting skills, combining all of them in a fun and safe environment. Students can develop performance skills with a number of performance opportunities throughout the year, as they learn about the history of theatre and theatre etiquette along the way.
Thursday
3pm - 4pm: Drama Club
A good understanding of characters, roles and the subtext of plays will allow students to relate better to different situations, context and even cultures. As a result, at Drama club, members are encouraged to develop empathy – the ability to view the world from another persons' perspective without judgement.
Friday
3pm - 4pm: Vocal Group
At Vocal Group, students are given the opportunity to sing fluently and confidently as an ensemble, and sometimes soloists. This develops their musical knowledge and skills including singing in harmony and learning new songs from different decades and styles. There are so many fantastic singers at LAB, so we would really love more of our singers to be part of the LAB Vocal Group.
Peripatetic Instrumental lessons
The LAB Performing Arts department is always working to celebrate and nurture new music talent at the Academy.
This term we have been offering guitar, piano and vocal lessons. Students have been working so hard and showing tremendous progress over the past module.
From January 2022, we will be offering violin, clarinet, saxophone, flute, trumpet and drum lessons.
All tuition is conducted on a one-to-one or groups basis with a rolling timetable. This means students will have tuition at a different time every week, therefore the impact on missing the same lesson twice is minimised. These lessons are paid for by parents or subsidised by the school via Pupil Premium funding.
There are a limited number of places and instruments available and therefore it is a first come first served basis.
Please do get in contact with the office to register your interest, or for further information regarding prices and the timetable.
Winter Showcase
A cast of over 30 LAB students took to the stage to present the Performing Arts Winter Showcase.
Students from Year 7 to Year 10 in module 1 and 2 have been working on a variety of creative performances across all aspects of performing arts: music, drama and dance both in class and in after school extra-curricular clubs.
LAB are huge advocates of collaboration, inclusivity, ambition and resilience, particularly in the Performing Arts and this showcase demonstrated these values.
The Performing Arts Department is incredibly proud of the cast of students and we look forward to our next event which fingers crossed will be held in person.
