LAB students took part in a special research project that culminated in them producing 720 drawings of unknown men, women and children who have lost their lives or been impacted by conflict in 20th Century wars. The project was based upon Rob Heard’s 2018 installation ‘Shrouds of the Somme’ which marked 100 years since the end of the First World War. 72,396 shrouded figures were laid out in rows in Queen Elizabeth Park as a reminder of those who lost their lives in the horrific battle.
LAB students created their own drawings of those who have lost their lives based upon their research. They used expressive line drawings to create a unique silhouette and then included details on the reverse about the individual. The art team with help from our Duke of Edinburgh volunteers displayed each of the images around Academy Square ahead of our Remembrance Day service on 11th November.
Year 7 LAB students came together in Academy Square for a special service whilst the rest of the LAB community stood in silence in their classrooms. The service began with an introduction by Ms Smith, which was followed by Airy students Taya and Charlie reading the poems In Flanders Fields and The Gift of India. This was followed with a beautiful performance of the Last Post by Fawcett student Jadon on his trumpet. Finally, staff and students then observed a two minute silence together.
On Wednesday 17th November four of our Student Government representatives visited Invicta Primary School. They were incredibly excited to work with Year 5s in their anti-bullying week workshops. Erin, Aarion and Bolu in Year 8 and Haleema in Year 7 were a credit to our school. The students also talked about how bullying is dealt with at LAB and who to go to if you needed to talk to an adult.
The Head of School Ms Gallagher was so impressed with the fantastic work. She said: “The pupils at Invicta absolutely loved having your pupils at school. They discussed scenarios and talked about how it would be dealt with at LAB. They felt reassured that you had so many processes in place so that they could seek support should they need to. The children were so well behaved and patient with the younger children and a credit to your school. The Year 6 teacher spent the afternoon raving about LAB!!”
On Thursday 21st October we held our Proud to Be Showcase in the Theatre. This was the culmination of a three week project which students had worked on in tutor time; it focused on the theme of identity and Proud to Be as part of our Black History Month celebrations. The set list for the Showcase included an impressive number of students; some of whom performed poems about what they were Proud to Be and others who performed songs, raps and acted too. A special well done to all students who took part for their fantastic performances and for the resilience and ambition you showed in performing in front of so many staff and students. We also had a huge number of beautiful pieces performed in tutor time during the week and will be displaying these within the College next module. Well done to everyone who participated and thank you to all those who came along to cheer on the College and their friends.
On Friday 19th November we took great pleasure in seeing students and staff wearing accessories and donating money to raise awareness for Children in Need. Here are just a few of our colourful participants....
