A chance to hush that rumbling tummy, take a break, and have catch-up chats with chums. Oh yes, a highlight of the day, for sure. No-one appreciates lunch time like the school go-er after a morning of intense learning; it offers students an opportunity to let loose, recalibrate their brain and prepare for more school to come.
But for a few here at LAB, lunch time started to lose its magic. Those less comfortable with large groups and loud noises started to become uneasy in the hustle and bustle of the school canteen. For a handful of students, the lunch time bell did not signal rest, but a chore to endure… Well … not anymore!
Lunch time is making a revival for those seeking a quieter alternative in the form of a small club called Lunch Bunch. Running twice a day (once over each lunch break), the Lunch Bunch offers a small haven within the school where students eat food, play games, chat with friends and explore their creativity.
This alternative lunch scheme has been described by those who attend as ‘peaceful’, ‘calm’, ‘non judgmental’, ‘secluded’ where those who take part can ‘make friends’ and ‘get along with everyone’ whilst being offered ‘the opportunity to make friends in different year groups.’
Over the past few weeks the sessions have focused on a number of different activities: such as back-to-back drawing, wink murder, flag making and (perhaps most importantly) UNO!!! - something Miss Thomson thought she was good at until she met her match with the year tens!
All-in-all, Lunch Bunch has been a huge success. Not only has it provided a great deal of happiness and fun to all who attend, but it has also offered some a much-needed sanctuary. In the LAB community, it is vital that all are able to work hard (of course!) but also find the space and time to rest. And, I promise you, you couldn’t eat lunch with a lovelier bunch!

Just a reminder that we are promoting www.kooth.com as a free, safe and anonymous online source of support for young people.
On Kooth, students can chat to a friendly counsellor, read articles written by young people, get support from the Kooth community and write in a daily journal.
There is also a short four minute video on the homepage, which we encourage parents to watch too!
