Yr 7: What they are learning this module:
For year 7, we are focusing on rhythm and silence in composition, in order to create a piece that reflects a personal narrative. We are studying the use of rhythmical notation and body percussion to create cohesive rhythms as an individual that showcases an understanding of the previously seen elements of music. We will have an emphasis on practical endeavours to allow students to think creatively about ways to make/create music.

Yr 8: What they are learning this module:
For year 8, we are studying Popular music and how Blues and Jazz have influenced Pop Music’s instrumentation, arrangements and structure. We are having a focus on arrangements and cover versions and how musicians have reinterpreted songs to make it their own. Our main reference is Ben E King’s piece “Stand by me”, it’s hook, riff and how students could update it with their musical knowledge.

Yr 9: What they are learning this module:
In year 9, we are continuing our exploration of West African music’s influence on music from the Caribbeans and UK’s bass culture. We are having a focus on the birth of Notting Hill Carnival, from the work of Claudia Jones and Rhaune Laslett and the musical upbringing of Reggae, from Jamaica to the UK.
With a study of Bob Marley and the Wailers, Peter Tosh or Burning Spear, students are invited to reflect on the influences of West African music in Reggae and the influences of Reggae in music from the UK in order to create a personal piece of music that shows how music can bring people together.
