Our transdisciplinary theme this term was ‘How We Express Ourselves` and the central idea that we have been exploring was: ‘Performances can engage an audience.`
As part of this term’s provocation, the children completed some science experiments during Science and Art week. They investigated how light travels using cards, toy cars and mirrors and they worked out that light travels in straight lines. The children also completed an ‘I think, I see, I wonder’ into how colour is formed through light.
Once the children had been introduced to this term’s topic, they started the term by continuing to discover many ideas about ‘The features of production’. The children inquired further into light and how it can show different colours using torches, fairy liquid and a straw. The children brought all of their knowledge about light, how it travels and how colours are formed by using their computing skills to create their own knowledge organisers, which included key vocabulary they had learnt too. Also, the children started to be introduced to different songs and scripts from the production so they could start getting into characters and thinking about how these may feature in the production.
Our second line of inquiry this term was to investigate ‘How components are made’. The children started this line of inquiry by researching and gaining knowledge about different types of stitches they can use when sewing. Then, they practised these and created their own design of an Egyptian belt. The children were then able to create their belt using their new stitching knowledge. As well as this, they have continued making a wide range of props such as: a shield, poppers and pharaoh masks which will all feature as part of their production. The children continued to rehearse the production scenes and songs in full rehearsals to really start bringing the production together.
For our final line of inquiry, the children have investigated ‘What makes shows successful’. The children have continued to rehearse their production using different elements to make it successful. Additionally, the children have created a Google Form to ask their audience after the production is completed what they have done well and what they could do to improve shows further in the future. The children then showed their Computing skills by creating a script from our production using the ‘hanging indent’ tool. They were reflective as they improved one of the scenes in order to make the scene successful and engage an audience.
Finally, the children performed their production in front of the other children from DPA and for their parents and carers. The children were incredible risk-takers and really brought the production to life! Furthermore, parents and carers were also able to see all of the children’s incredible hard work from this year through the PYP exhibition alongside the show. We are so incredibly proud of the children and all they have achieved throughout their Dartford Primary Academy journey. We have thoroughly enjoyed teaching them over the last two years. We wish them all of the greatest success as they move onto their next adventure!
