The children from the nursery had a wonderful term.
They were exploring how things grow by planting cress, beans, potatoes and flowers, learnt to take care of plants by watering them, measuring beans’ stalks, and helping weeding in the garden. They learnt about parts of the plant by discussing a video, singing a song with movements, creating a mini art project.
Making art and craft is one of the most favourite things to do for children. They did a lot of mark making including with flowers, pom poms, gears. Created puppets and a cloud to play Three Billy Gruff Goats story and worked on art project Parts of the flower, made collages using materials of different texture on their own choice, created A Gate collage and constructed bridges to act the Three Billy Gruff Goats story. During the term children had a lot of opportunities to choose materials, cut, manipulate and stick them which supports their fine motor skills but also their creativity and engage them in the learning process in a funny way.
Working on their phonics and literacy children listened to lots of stories such as Jack and the beanstalk, Three Billy Gruff Goats, non-fictional books for plants or going to school, had their phonics learning games, marking and writing their names or first letter of their name, games with initial sound of the words.
They also measured and counted, sorted and compared with manipulatives but also natural materials found in the garden or provided by practitioners, copied, continued or created patterns of small bear counters or Duplo blocks and recalled their knowledge about shapes by singing a song, creating picture of a plant or their own choice by using shapes and talked about them. The children learnt positional language with games such as ‘Where is Jack?’ and practiced this language on a daily basis during their play with peers.
Although so young, children at the nursery like science. They experimented with a selection of items to see what is magnetic and what is not and also what sinks, what floats, discussed the results and ‘recorded’ them.
All children were so excited to spend some time at Reception. After having this experience, they discussed starting school, learnt the song ‘I can follow the rules’, listened non-fictional and fictional stories about starting School and the first day at school. They drew their pictures My school and played Going to school role play.
This term, children also learnt about Growing and changing, read A letter to Zoo and Handa’s surprise stories. They did a lot of exciting activities like Looking after animals in the Zoo- a role play with checking and recording how well are animals attended, an animal foot print mark making, estimating how many animals can we fit in a box and many more.
Children learnt how to make orange juice and talked about the sequence of it. They also tried to carry a basket on their heads just like Handa and played a lot of sports games during the sport week.
