LECLIC -”Living in the Era of Climate Change is a two-year ERASMUS+ project with an extension of one year, which uses innovative trends of STE(A)M curriculum, Cloud computing, Virtual Reality and Competence Driving education and aims to raise students’ and teachers’ awareness on environmental issues and climate change.
The project emerges from the need of the four participating schools to endorse the priorities established in the Agenda of Sustainable Development Goals on the field of education and climate change, recognising the different geographical and meteorological effects observed in the different countries, and with the aim of understanding the complexity of climate change through the analysis of its causes and consequences, the relationship with the lifestyle and quality of life of the families, and to recognize the need to undertake actions to mitigate it.
311 students aged 10 to 18 years old have participated in local activities and 146 students aged 11 to 16 years old in transnational activities designed and implemented under the principles of inclusivity and competency-driven approach. Students have benefited from the participation in the project by valuing the importance of undertaking collaborative actions at a European dimension to mitigate climate change, looking for the transference of these actions to a familiar level, acknowledging the importance of STEAM subjects, learning to continue their studies and initiating their vocations and enriching their oral and written expression in English.
Twenty-four teachers with multidisciplinary backgrounds have participated in the peer-to-peer methodology of the teacher training events with the aim of designing, implementing and assessing local and transnational activities promoting their professional development through the integration of technological, pedagogical and STEAM knowledge on climate change.
The local activities have been designed and implemented as an extension of the students’ curriculum on climate change and consisted in the design of the LECLIC logo, the research and preparation of presentations on the regions, towns and cities, schools, curriculum and causes and consequences of climate change in the regions, the style of life and quality of life of their countries. The transnational activities have been organized as four LECLIC Climate Change Conferences with the aim of analyzing and comparing the causes and consequences of climate change, the relationship with the lifestyle and quality of life and actions to mitigate climate change in the four countries of the partner schools: Greece, Italy, Portugal and Spain. As a conclusion of all the research, analysis and comparison done, students have prepared short-films with a decalogue of actions to mitigate climate change, prepared virtual reality resources and games for an immersive understanding of climate change and designed a LECLIC guide on climate change, as an online presentation portfolio.
The reflection about the process has enabled teachers to write a curricular proposal on STEAM education, on climate change including the theoretical and practical principles for a blend of methodologies (cloud computing, virtual, physical, curricular, extracurricular, interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary) englobed in problem based learning, inquire learning and design engineering based on learning approaches and described in the worksheets, implementation and evaluation documents.
The synergies created between the teachers of a broad range of subjects have assured the integration of STEAM subjects into the design, implementation and evaluation of those activities. The leading of the activities between the different schools have increased the synergies when designing, implementing and evaluating them. Colegio La Salle-Buen Consejo has been in charge of the Google Drive Storage, the Google Site (Webpage of the project) and the III LECLIC Conference on Climate Change; 14th Junior High School of Patras has designed the poster, lead the logo competition and the II LECLIC Conference; Scuola secondaria di I Grado Ciro Scianna has designed and implemented the eTwinning, TwinSpace, the Virtual LECLIC conference and the I LECLIC conference, and Agrupamento de Escolas Rio Novo do Principe-Cacia has designed the brochures, lead the short-film competition and the IV LECLIC conference. Synergies with local authorities, eco-friendly business, research institutions, council observatories and biotechnological institutes have been created with a common aim to help in mitigating climate change.
The use of the Webpage of the project, the eTwinning twinspace, the ERASMUS+ Project Results Platform, the social media and networks will help the dissemination of the outputs of the project, ensuring the sustainability of the project and enlarging the community of students, teachers, researchers and policy-makers interested in STEAM education on climate change.
