Knowing Your Learners: The Right to Read Report
The Research:
The Ontario Human Rights Commission released the Right to Read Report in 2019. The focus of the report is on early reading skills. It is about 500 pages long. Within the report there is a section on First Nations, Métis and Inuit experiences. The report outlines some context and the impact of colonialism on Indigenous youth.
Recommended Actions:
Recognize distinctions. Pay attention to language. When you learn how a student prefers to self-identify, then use the words they use. Click here to read more.

Identify Indigenous students and provide access to supports. (ISW, IGC, School Team and System Support and advocacy). Call us to help connect students to supports.
Use instruction and intervention approaches that are effective and inclusive. (The 3 Tiers approach) including 7 Principles of Indigenous Education, Holistic Approach to Indigenous Education.
