Specialized Programs for Students

#ReconciliACTIONatKPR

Overview of Programs

An integral part of our department are the Indigenous Student Workers (ISW), Indigenous Grad Coaches (IGC) and our program at the Urban Indigenous Alternative Secondary School Program (ASSP) Waawiye Kinoomaagzijig (Circle of Learning) at Nogojiwanong Friendship Centre. The programming is centered around the needs of the students and leads with student voice.

The ISWs work with students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 in all three regions, the IGCs work with students at Bowmanville High School and East Northumberland Secondary School, and the ASSP supports students in earning credits and working towards their OSSD in a cultural setting.

Students are engaged in learning that explores and values Indigenous knowledge, culture and perspectives to create respectful relationships among students, staff, families, and local Indigenous communities. The team is committed to representing the individual learning journey for each student as they develop these relationships through conversation, traditional teachings, and creative exploration. The paths are guided by student voice and directly responsive to their needs.
